		<title>New website for CHV</title>
		<description>
CHV has now completed the public section of our new website, which should make communication of vital information easier, as well as being much easier to navigate.

Still in development is the administration area of the site which, it is hoped, will make the running of CHV as an organisation easier, through filing systems and communication of vital information year on year regardless of changes in membership.

		<title>Stranded 2004</title>
		<description>
This was Children's Holiday Venture's annual fundraising event and it raised over &Acirc;&pound;3000 for our charity.

On 30th October 2004, 58 students, in teams of 3 and 4 from the University of Edinburgh were left stranded next to Loch Ranoch. None of the students were aware of the location because they had been driven in a dark coach into the highlands before being blindfolded from the coach into the forest.

The aim of the day was for each team to find their own way back to Edinburgh using their own initiative and whatever resources they could find. The greater purpose was for each team to raise lots of money for Children's Holiday Venture (CHV), a student organised charity which organises trips and holidays for children from deprived areas of Edinburgh. Teams had to raise sponsorship money of at least &Acirc;&pound;50 per individual for CHV's annual fundraising event.

Obligatory fancy dress was one of the compulsory rules of the day; costumes ranged from sheep to brides and grooms, nuns and police women. Fortunately the inhabitants of Kinloch Rannoch, the nearest town to the 'stranded' destination had been warned of the event via the local media. Still, sitting in a local caf&Atilde;&copy; on the morning of the event it was interesting to see the faces of the locals who whilst enjoying their morning coffee watched fairies, pirates, and 1950s style ramblers stroll past the caf&Atilde;&copy; window.

In addition to getting back to Edinburgh quickly, teams had to collect objects on the way home. There were compulsory objects to collect including 'something hairy', a mushroom and a thistle and then extra points to collect for other objects. Prizes were awarded at a prize giving ceremony on the same evening with categories including best fancy dress, quickest team back to Edinburgh and most points raised.

Teams found various methods to travel back to Edinburgh, the most common being hitch hiking. However there were more unusual methods too; the police women managed to hitch a lift in a police van and in spectacular style, the 'woolly wanderer's', the team who dressed as sheep managed to collect the most points, returned to Edinburgh in a limousine!

CHV has already raised at least &Acirc;&pound;3000 through this exciting fundraising venture. This couldn't have been achieved without the fantastic effort of all the volunteers who gave up their time to raise money and without the students within CHV who spent a lot of effort organising the event.

		<title>CHV Kid's Article In National Newspaper</title>
		<description>
We are delighted to present this news article from The Scotsman which was written by a former CHV child, Tina Souter (with permission from her family).Tina was a kid at CHV 3 years ago, and we wish her every success with her endeavours.&amp;nbsp; Hopefully, her article will lead to increased understanding of the issues affecting the youth of North Edinburgh.&amp;nbsp; Her group leader, and all students who know Tina wish her a big congratulations on a job well done!&amp;gt; Post messages about this article in the alumni message board please. &amp;nbsp;&amp;gt; See Original Article Here.&amp;nbsp;SIPHIWE MNGCOLWANI and CHRISTINA SOUTER THE press are doing more harm than good in their portrayal of Scottish youth. What can now be seen as constant attack on us by media has become seriously damaging, not only to us but also to the perception of our local communities. A negative picture is constantly being painted by the media. Whether they don&amp;#39;t notice it or just don&amp;#39;t care, they need to realise the part they play in destroying our morale. And remember, we are the future readers and listeners. Thugs, gangs, hooligans, Asbo. You get the picture; the black hoodies, eyes hidden and a gritty black and white backdrop. You can easily associate them with young people. But this is a distortion. It models a whole society after a tiny fraction of individuals in it. It is a shame that real lives of young people can be overshadowed by stereotypes. Compare the stories plastered on pages every day and see how many of them are negative and sensationalised. Now think of the young people you actually know. The two don&amp;#39;t add up. I can only associate the gap between the two as propaganda or just a culture of lazy journalism. Why can&amp;#39;t we look at the good actions as much as we publicise the bad stories? It&amp;#39;s not because there is a shortage of good stories with no news value. At our school, Craigroyston High, you can find so many great achievements and talent. We have our own rock band, samba band, senior pupils who buddy juniors and volunteer at a special school. And that is just a few stories from only one school. We can show our talents and good achievements by getting more good stories in the media. One place you find good news stories is local press like the North Edinburgh News. And earlier this week the Evening News had a story about a young actress from North Edinburgh. But these are exceptions that prove the rule. And there is no point putting a few token stories in local press alone. It doesn&amp;#39;t reach enough people. Let&amp;#39;s make a big change. If young people had a more direct say in the media our voices could be heard and a real snapshot of our views could be vividly seen. Our image would be reflected with justice. There is a way to do it. Would the press be willing to sign up to an agreement to balance coverage more fairly? This could be a historic young people&amp;#39;s media charter. A drastic change may not be immediate, but every sentence in this column shows there is hope. &amp;bull; Siphiwe Mngcolwani and Christina Souter are pupils at Craigroyston High School&amp;copy;2007 Scotsman.com
